Acoustic Cues to Syntactic Ambiguity in Taiwan Mandarin
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigated how acoustic cues signal the different syntactic structures of ambiguous sentences in language production. Acoustic cues such as intensity, f0, pause and duration vary according to different syntactic boundaries. Intensity of post-boundary syllable, f0 reset range of syllables around the corresponding target boundary, pause, and final lengthening of preboundary syllable were compared. Results showed that the boundaries across higher branching syntactic structures are marked by larger cross boundary f0 reset range, the existence of pause, and longer pre-boundary final lengthening. Acoustic cues can facilitate top down information during nature language parsing to identify intended meanings.

A study of the melodic contour of Mandarin and French through Syntactic Structural Ambiguity
An acoustic study was conducted to investigate the melodic properties of prosodic boundary markers in the resolution of Syntactic Structural Ambiguity (SSA) in Mandarin and French. Based on the experimental results, I present the following arguments: as a well-documented marker of discourse junctures in other languages [1], [6], [7], [17], [18], [21], pitch reset is also used within the sentenc...
متن کاملProsodic and Acoustic Features of Emotional Speech in Taiwan Mandarin
The present study investigated pitch and durational cues of emotional speech in Taiwan Mandarin. Acted connected speech in anger, joy, sorrow, fear and neutral emotions were recorded. Results showed that F0 height and speech rate were more correlated with the arousal dimension, which differentiate emotions of high arousal, such as anger and joy, from low arousal ones. On the other hand, final l...
متن کاملAcoustic Correlates of Mandarin Nasal Codas and Their Contribution to Perceptual Saliency
Two experiments were designed to investigate two issues: (a) acoustic correlates in the place of articulation in Mandarin syllable-final nasals, and (b) the contribution of acoustic cues to perceptual saliency for the alveolar-velar nasal contrast. In Experiment 1, an acoustic analysis identified phonetic features adopted by L1 and L2 speakers of Mandarin in Taiwan to distinguish the [n]-[ ] pa...
متن کاملDoes Prosodic-Foot Disyllabicity Hold a Default Status in Mandarin Speech Perception?
An acoustic experiment was conducted to investigate the perceptual processing of native Mandarin speakers in syntactic ambiguity resolution. The statistical majority of disyllabic words in modern Chinese [17] and the prosodic theory of Binary Foot Formation in Mandarin [3], [4], [9], [10], [11], [15] point to the stipulation that the disyllabic prosodic feet have a special 'default' status in t...
متن کاملAcoustic cues to tonal contrasts in Mandarin: implications for cochlear implants.
The present study systematically manipulated three acoustic cues--fundamental frequency (f0), amplitude envelope, and duration--to investigate their contributions to tonal contrasts in Mandarin. Simplified stimuli with all possible combinations of these three cues were presented for identification to eight normal-hearing listeners, all native speakers of Mandarin from Taiwan. The f0 information...
